Designing Interiors for Celebrity Athletes

Major League Baseball veteran Asdrúbal Cabrera recruited Brett and Giselle Sugerman to design the interiors of an incredible 9,000 sq. ft., 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom tropical modern mansion in the exclusive neighborhood of Landmark Ranch Estates in Southwest Ranches.

The star athlete and Venezuelan native, chose the sought-after team at B+G to entrust the interior design of his new residence. B+G created sleek interiors that simultaneously feel modern, warm and inviting. Sprawled out across two acres in the upscale gated community, the property designed by architecture firm Choeff Levy Fishman, who also designed former baseball player, Alex Rogriguez’s home, exudes a modern tropical appeal.

An eye dropping mahogany pivot door opens to the foyer where a stunning bespoke travertine center table sets a tone of understated elegance. Just beyond, an intimate seating area with leather swiveling Desiree chairs separates the formal living room from the dining room. B+G considered the athlete’s love of gathering with his family and relatives, creating spaces that engage and offer opportunities to interact.

Vibrant teal velvet chairs pop in the sitting room, where layers of coffee tables in mixed metals add depth. Custom rift oak millwork accents envelop the space. Bringing the room together is a light-blue custom rug with hints of a golden linear design.

The open kitchen is appointed with fine, handcrafted Italian cabinetry, combining warm tones with white surfaces. Black leather counter stools tuck away neatly. With plenty of seating, the lacquer and bronze kitchen table extends when needed to welcome more guests.

Facing calming outdoor views of the lush backyard, the dining room features a custom walnut table surrounded by low-profile taupe leather chairs from Potocco that offer comfortable and stylish seating for twelve. Framed by the living room and sitting area, the dining room centers the gathering spaces uniting the design in the first floor.

The movie theater, billiard room, and playroom are bold spaces where B+G layered textures and rich hues. A custom pool table in aluminum with black rails and blue felt is playful yet rich in its design, offering the adults a place to socialize beside the bar. A custom rug was designed to discreetly showcase Cabrera’s uniform number “13”. Leather bar stools upholstered in a blue-grey leather line the bar. The movie theater is a cinematic experience with a custom U-shaped sofa in charcoal color and silver accompanied by black leather ottomans.
B+G opted for unique accent lighting thoughtfully placed throughout, including a show stopping multi-level LED chandelier that illuminates the foyer. Custom-tufted rugs – exclusively designed by B+G – are seen throughout the residence adding personally crafted details. The powder rooms are like hidden gems, a signature space in B+G’s designs. One features bronze mirrors and gold tones where the second feels contemporary with an elongated mirror and tiled walls.

A floating staircase leads to the expansive master suite on the second floor, also accessible via elevator. The master bedroom demonstrates B+G’s ingenuity and talent for customization; their unique approach to the headboard wall features wood and mirrored panels, floating nightstands, and a fully-upholstered custom bed – all done in a sophisticated palette of cream and taupe. The master bathroom has custom illuminated vanity mirrors and a bespoke counter stool in a grey finish upholstered in satin white leather. A cozy kid’s room on the second floor boasts an oversized citrine-colored sofa. A built-in desk provides an area for work and focus with three Herman Miller task chairs in studio white. “Asdrúbal has a large extended family and he loves to entertain. It was important for him to have a home that was beautiful and modern, while feeling inviting and functional. We designed this house with his family as the focal point and allowed that to guide our design process.” said Giselle. “We kept the design of the interiors clean and unfettered but added layers and texture to bring a sense of warmth.” The residence also features a gym with a private treatment room and wine cellar. Beyond the interior walls, nothing is left to be desired; an infinity edge pool, sunken fire pit, basketball court and fully equipped outdoor kitchen ensure that the indoor and outdoor experience of these sensational living quarters is perfectly suited for this athlete’s lifestyle.
